INEC WITHOLDS GOVERNOR OKOROCHA’S CERTIFICATE OF RETURN

Written by on March 14, 2019

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) today declined to issue Imo State governor Rochas Okorocha his certificate of return, even as the other 109 elected Senators received theirs.
The governor, who contested and won the Imo West Senatorial District election during the 23rd February, was however denied his mandate by the electoral body on allegations that the returning officer, Innocent Ibeawuchi, was made to announce the result under duress.

Governor Okorocha, who addressed youths at the State House in Owerri, argued that the move to withhold his certificate of return based on allegations without hearing his own side of the story was unjust.

He further argued that INEC’s action was a mockery of Nigeria’s democracy adding that the electoral body might have has colluded with some of his detractors to deny him his mandate.
