On the foreign scene, the health ministry in the DR Congo has said the number of cases in the nearly eight-month-old epidemic of Ebola in the eastern part of the country now exceeds 1,000, where a fraction have lost their lives.
The outbreak was first recorded in North Kivu province on August 1, after which it spread to neighbouring Ituri province.
Reports from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) its toll is the second deadliest in the history of Ebola, after an epidemic in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone from 2014-2016 that claimed 11,308 lives.
